Local Services Ads for solar: the MCS advantage most installers don't know about

Search for a local service on Google and look at what sits at the very top - above the traditional ads, above the map, above everything. Those units with the green tick and "Google Guaranteed" badge are Local Services Ads, and for solar installers they are the most underused placement on the results page.

Why LSAs are structurally different

Traditional search ads charge per click: someone taps your ad, you pay, whatever happens next. Local Services Ads charge per lead - you pay when a customer actually contacts you through the unit. The risk model flips from "pay for attention" to "pay for conversations", which is exactly the direction an installation business wants.

They also carry Google's own trust signal. The Google Guaranteed badge means the business has passed Google's screening checks - and for consumers spending thousands on a home improvement, that third-party vetting does real persuasive work before you've said a word.

Where MCS comes in

To run LSAs, Google screens your business: registration, insurance, and the licences relevant to your trade. For UK solar, MCS accreditation is the credential that matters. If you're MCS-accredited, you already hold the qualification most of the screening leans on - the paperwork is largely sitting in your filing cabinet.

Here's the strategic point: every unaccredited operator and general "renewables consultant" bidding on solar keywords in the normal ad slots cannot follow you into this placement. LSAs are one of the few places where your accreditation isn't just a trust badge - it's a moat.

Why so few installers use them

Three reasons, all fixable. The setup is bureaucratic - document checks, verification steps, and an interface completely separate from normal Google Ads. The placement is newer to UK trades than to US ones, so awareness is low. And most generic agencies never mention it, because most generic agencies don't know the solar landscape well enough to know the door exists.

LSAs alongside search ads, not instead

LSAs aren't a replacement for search campaigns - inventory is limited and Google decides when the units show. The strongest setup runs both: LSAs capturing the top-of-page, pay-per-lead traffic when available, search ads with full call tracking covering everything else, and a landing page built to convert whichever route the homeowner takes.

What does Google actually check?

The screening is thorough but finite. Google verifies your business registration and contact details, confirms your public liability insurance is current, and runs background checks appropriate to the trade. For UK solar that sits neatly on top of the paperwork MCS certification already required of you, which is why accredited installers tend to clear it faster than most. Have digital copies of your insurance certificate and company registration ready before you start, and budget a week or two for verification to complete.

How is LSA ranking decided?

Unlike normal search ads, you can't simply bid your way to the top of the Local Services unit. Google decides who appears on a mix of proximity to the searcher, your review score and volume, how quickly and reliably you respond to leads, and how complete your profile is. The consequence is encouraging for smaller firms: an installer who answers fast and asks every happy customer for a Google review will out-rank a larger competitor who does neither. Responsiveness is a ranking factor, not just good manners.

What do LSA leads cost, and what if one is junk?

You're charged per lead, and the rate varies by trade and area rather than a fixed national price, so treat any figure quoted online as indicative and check your own dashboard once verified. Importantly, you can dispute leads that were never genuine - wrong service, spam, or clearly outside your area - and Google credits them back. That keeps the pay-per-lead model honest, and it mirrors the qualified-call rule we bill on: you should never pay for a contact that was never a real prospect in the first place.

Reviews are the engine, so start today

Because review score and volume feed directly into both LSA ranking and consumer trust, the most valuable habit you can build - even before verification completes - is asking for reviews. Every finished installation is an opportunity: a short, specific request sent the day the scaffolding comes down converts far better than a generic "please review us" a fortnight later. Reviews on your Google Business Profile carry across to the LSA unit, so the effort compounds over time, and it's the one ranking factor entirely within your control. Do it consistently and, over a season, your Local Services ranking tends to look after itself.

Setting up and managing LSAs is part of every Panel Reach campaign - it's in what we do. If you're MCS-accredited and not running them, you're leaving the best seat on the page empty. Book a call and we'll get you verified.
